This week we talked about love letters, and more specifically, love letters during the war. The class just gets more and more personal as we go on. Being able to hear someone read out loud these letters and these thoughts is so much more impactful than just reading them. Men talk about how much they long for the hands of their girlfriends, and how much they miss them. These letters are so much more personal than any text our generation sends. Having to write out every word makes everything so much more impactful than a text that is written for the sense of time. As the years go by kids of my generation find crazy new ways in order to shorten the time it takes to write a message to someone. Just to me the idea of writing out the text “I love you” and “ily” hold so much more power. Then also the popular complexity of being the first person to say I love you in a relationship. It makes me think about how many steps back we have taken as a society in being able to express feelings. How these men and women would write about how full their hearts were, and how they longed to be with each other again. When today we barely find the time to send someone a text saying we miss them. Now we do not even say it. We send each other videos or tik toks saying “send this someone…” It has become so hard for people to express their emotions, and usually when people do they are shot down and judges very easily by how fast information spreads. I wonder if sharing feelings back then was so much easier because the lack of social media? Not every confession of love needed to be heard by the whole world, and the whole world did not get to share their opinion.
