This week I used a lot of class time to think about my thesis. I had a vague idea due to the essay I was currently writing in History and Politics of Education. I was faced with the prompt of “Is all education good?” and my first thought was, yes. Learning more about the world can only heighten your perspective, and make you a more informed and inspired person. As I learned more about that history, as well as history in seminar, I realized how easily shaped a child’s mind is. Children retain what they learn at a young age in such an odd way. In my essay I compared their brains as a lump of clay, the older they get, the more details that set in. It is hard to teach an old new tricks is a better way to put it. This idea came out to me more during the Miss Breed letters. How Children were taken out of their homes and thrown into insufficient housing and were malnourished, and they still found a positive side to life. Ted the kid I read about, even wanted to fight for the country that caused him all this pain. Then in History class we watched a video of a woman who grew up in the South during Segregation, and she talked a lot about the discrimination she faced during her childhood. She went on about how things being separate but still very much not equal. I recall in the beginning of the interview when she was asked about her overall childhood life and she said “life was great.” Even now no longing living with this much discrimination in her life, she still thinks of her childhood as great. As a kid she was taught that was just how things are, and still is ok with how she grew up to this day. This is proving that being taught things at a young age permanently changes your mind. Even when you live in a different perceptive later in your life, it is hard for you to not think of things front your original point of view.
