Well, I completely changed my mind, yet again. I made my final a little more convoluted than I think it needed to be, but I really enjoyed picking this whole thing apart. Diving into what the ‘meaning’ of the story was. This got me thinking to all of my high school English classes and the hours spent digging into stories. I thought about How to Read Literature like a Professor. For those who don’t know that entire book is just about common themes that run through all books. Things like any sort rain or a character getting wet in any sense, is a baptism. A change for the character, and a wash away of their past or who they once were. Hannah reminded me of the classic young girl and the vampire. How a girl is played by a vampire but ends up getting bit in the neck by the man she trusted. But who is the vampire in situation? Justin? I think everyone is Hannah’s vampire. Society and other people’s expectations and standards is what grabbed Hannah and took advantage of her. She just wanted the movie perfect high school experience, but that is what killed her. Having such a youthful outlook on life is what got her classmates to step on her. Her juvenile spirit came across as weak, and that is why her neck was wide open. This also reminds me of my next English class where I had to read parts of the original story. the Bible. Not the whole Bible but bits and pieces. We learned again that all themes and all stories follow each other, and this got me thinking about the 7 deadly sins. Why exactly I am not sure but I want to refresh my memory on The Paradise Lost in order to better grasp what I am going for.
