This week we read our short stories, and ours was the one story that was not written in letter format. Letters being sent back and forth between people and reading their conversation and stories through that. Rather our story relied on a letter that was going to be written in the future. This abstract idea that still involved the idea of letter writing as a crucial part of the story made me think b about my own short story. I really am not sure where to start with it and what I actually want to do. I thought about how you feel when you finish stories and how you start to piece together motifs and themes and ideas, how certain characters or objects help shape those claims. I think the best way to work in something like this is backwards. Think of claims and ideas I wish to harp on in my story, and think about how I could use that to develop characters and a storyline in order to fit those claims. I think this would be a lot easier than writing a storyline and trying to shove in motifs, symbolism, and new claims into it. I want my story to still be written in letters, but I want it to be based around the emotional expression through letter writing. I think of how people (me) write letters to people in order to get what they are thinking out, but they never choose to send them. I wanted to take that idea and focus on someone who does that with someone from their past. Someone who it is maybe hard to let go of, someone who maybe does not respond back to these letters. I want to maybe take a series of letters written by a girl to her ex who left her, but I want to write it in the sense that he has passed away. How she moves on and how writing to him and sending them to where he is ‘buried’ helps her process how she feels and her situation.
